A new, 200 room hotel demonstrates Christchurch Airport’s commitment to meeting future growth and enhancing its visitor experience
High aspirations
The 4.5 star Novotel was developed by Christchurch International Airport Limited (CIAL) in response to record passenger growth and increasing demand for hotel beds in the city. The hotel includes function spaces, gym, fine dining restaurant, café and bar and 200 rooms, and is located next to the international terminal.
Down-to-earth challenges
Our team has been involved in a fast track concept design process, working with a consultant team to develop the concept and inputs to the business case. Our role is to provide full project management services during design, procurement and construction. Key challenges include managing use of a tight site space that has surrounding public access, as well as ensuring all security requirements are met for a project unfolding on-site at an operational international airport. In addition, we have had to navigate a heated contractor and subcontractor market and mitigate the effects of unexpected delays.
Points of interest
- The Warren and Mahoney-designed hotel is the airport company's second accommodation development and has been created in response to requests for more short-term airport accommodation.
- To ensure a smooth start on-site for the main contractor we split out the early works package and managed the various programmes of works separately.
