Expanding the footprint of a Queenstown accommodation icon
A 5-star project
Construction of an expansion to the centrally located 5-star Eichardt’s Hotel. The new building is situated beside the original and comprises a hotel restaurant, additional accommodation, and seven other tenancies including retail stores (Louis Vuitton, Art Gallery and World Clothing) and two business offices.
Our role was to project manage the construction of the main base build, the landlord's component of the hotel fit-out, and act as our client’s advisor to each of the seven additional tenancies during their fit-out.
Tight teams, tight site
The project required intensive management of the main contractor and a tight level of coordination between the tenant's interior designers and the client’s design team. The site itself posed a challenge too. Located in one of the highest tourist foot traffic areas in Queenstown, major construction works had to be undertaken on a very busy corner. One of the consent requirements was also to upgrade the street, which meant partial road closures. The project was delivered on time and on budget, with minimal impact on surrounding buildings, businesses and the public – a key priority for the client.
Points of interest
- The site of the expansion project originally housed the Eichardt’s stables, and many items of archaeological interest were retrieved from the site during excavation.
- The finished building is an iconic design architecturally, with hotel areas including "The Grille" restaurant, two suites on the first floor and a two-bedroomed penthouse apartment.
- Working smack dab in the heart of the CBD meant we had to navigate the challenges of taking delivery of large concrete pre-cast panels and managing concrete pours to minimise the impact on surrounding businesses and public.
