Facilitating the creation of Canterbury’s only walk-on floating marina, home to over a hundred vessels
Rich heritage, new life
Te Ana Marina is a brand new 170 berth marina and landside development that has breathed new life into the west side of the Lyttelton waterfront. The first stage of the marina development saw the replacement of old pile moorings with modern walk-on marina piers and an attractive landside commercial development area and public space.
We were involved in the marina project from early concept planning through to final completion. This included roles in public consultation, business case development, design management, procurement and construction management.
Minimising day-to-day disruption
Removal of the existing pile moorings required careful stakeholder engagement and sequencing to ensure that all vessels always had a berth. Marina construction involved marine piling, with strict noise and activity limits and challenging land and marine logistics. Landside design and construction required careful attention to the interfaces with the water, adjacent port activities, and adjacent businesses and public roads.
- Concrete marina pontoons were pre-cast in an empty LPC workshop, the first time that the marina contractor had set up a remote manufacturing facility. This approach reduced transport costs and risk of damage.
- LPC kick-started the landside development with a full refurbishment of a 1000sqm warehouse adjacent to the marina, with part of this space used for public toilets and a new marina office and administration area.
- Adjacent to the new marina, a row of large piles and marine fenders was installed to provide separation between the marina and adjacent working dry dock.
