A modern winery set in Otago’s breathtaking high country
Where craft meets functionality
Designed by Christchurch architect Charlie Nott, this considered, 2-storey facility has a 600 tonne production capacity and a clear design aesthetic. The initial winery project was completed in 2006. It incorporated an array of unique features including an elevated crush pad with gravity feed to the open-top fermenters via a mobile conveyor system. It also included a semi-buried barrel cellar, an outdoor covered area for white tanks and a wetland treatment system. More recently, our team has been involved in ongoing extensions, including expanding the outdoor white tank area and developing a new insulated store; the latter utilising a relocated poly-panel building reclad in Corten steel.
Bringing the winery to life
Our team was engaged to project manage the design, procurement and construction of the main building project, along with overseeing the installation of winery equipment. We were also involved extensively in the early scoping and development of the building concepts.
The building is known for its distinctive sloping roof, using Corten steel which we sourced and imported on behalf of the client. This project also challenged us to secure consents for, and ultimately construct, the wetland treatment system to manage the winery waste.
Points of interest
- The innovative Corten steel roofing tray was essential to the project, and involved securing a supplier in the USA, negotiating terms, arranging shipping and managing clearance and delivery to site.
- This project required us to complete critical construction elements in a tight six month time frame, ensuring the winery would be up and running in time for harvest.
- We successfully delivered the complexities of a large-scale, gravity flow winery, including an elevated grape delivery road.
