Rubix has successfully managed over 20 projects for the Catholic Diocese of Auckland, this project is a typical example. The project included a 2 storey 6 teaching space classroom block, and Rubix provided a comprehensive project management service throughout the whole project.
Steep site challenges
Rubix worked closely with the client, school and architect (DLM Architects) to choose a suitable site and work through the logistical challenges of constructing a block on a steep site requiring the relocation of existing classrooms and establishment of a temporary access road through an adjacent site. Rubix also worked closely with the contractor (Cassidy) to develop a programme that allowed them to make best use of the school holidays, which was important given the location of the new block in the heart of an operational school.
Flexible spaces enhance learning
During the design process an extensive value engineering process was required to ensure that cost met budget. Rubix led this process and worked with the QS (White Associates) to achieve the budget. The construction risks, particularly ground risk, were carefully managed and the project was delivered within budget. All parties (i.e. contractor, architect, Rubix) were clear on their respective roles with regard to quality during construction and met their obligations to deliver a quality building for the Diocese.
The building is the first block at the school with flexible learning spaces. The completed project has been very successful and is enjoyed by all who use the building.
Points of interest
- The growing school role at Marist required new classrooms and this building was the first 2 storey classroom block on the site.
- To create an access route to the construction site, modifications were required to an adjacent building owned by the Diocese, and the temporary access road needed to go over an adjacent school site.
