An innovative, two stage expansion of a world-renowned winery
A modern classic
Felton Road Winery is a modern, biodynamic winery in the heart of Central Otago. The two-stage expansion included a new barrel cellar and tasting facility, cleverly integrated into the existing building by architects McCoy & Wixon. We were engaged as the Project Manager for the design, consent and construction phases of this exciting project.
The first stage of the project was an underground barrel cellar, constructed by an innovative cut and cover method. The second stage saw the development of a building extension , designed to function as a tasting room or board room. The challenge throughout was to maintain the character of the existing winery building, whilst providing an ultra-modern facility for functions and staff.
A New Zealand first
The unique cut-and-cover design for the barrel cellar is potentially a New Zealand first, utilising pre-cast concrete elements to form a very efficient underground cellar adjoining the existing facility. Reportedly, the cellar has been very successful in maintaining ideal barrel store temperature control.
