Building on the past for the future
The existing buildings at ESR’s Kenepuru campus are at the end of their life, presenting an opportunity for the organisation to take it's science research activity into modern purpose built facilities for science research leading into the future. 4,000m2 of PC2 laboratory and supporting workspace and offices. Later demolition of the existing 7,200m2 facilities.
Rubix is providing, Project Director and Project Management services plus Engineer to Contract service when the construction phase is commenced in 2024. We are working closely alongside ESR’s Business Manager and Property and Facilities Director as well as Rau Paenga, providing advice to the Executive and ESR Board.
Key challenges and priorities
- Providing all necessary information to satisfy the ESR Board.
- Advising to help enable decisions and direction back to the project from Board level.
- Facilitating the design of the new buildings leading a high quality design team.
- Assessing the most appropriate staging to build the new facilities while maintaining BAU at the site.
- Working within a CRI under MBIE approvals.
- Working with RLB to provide as accurate budgeting and cost advice during design as possible.
- Procuring a Construction Partner in Wellingtons hot market by having regular conversations with key players in the region.
Points of interest
- Strong engagement with local iwi Ngati Toa Rangitira who have informed the cultural significance or the region and the purpose of ESR.
- The design reflects this iwi engagement and narrative.
- Designing buildings in a way which is different to the way the organisation does its science research now and in the past.
- Completing a procurement strategy that challenges MBIE guidelines but works with the current market.
