New boarding accommodation with sustainability and futureproofing in mind
Rubix has a long standing relationship with Dilworth and we have successfully delivered projects for them including staff housing, a student lodge and an extension to the gym.
The largest project we have delivered for Dilworth is the year 9 Boarding House project, completed in early 2023. This facility, designed by Jasmax and built by Savory Construction, consists of two two interconnected three-level buildings which are oriented around a north-facing courtyard. Each house includes accommodation for 48 students on the top two levels, along with kitchens, staff accommodation, academic breakout spaces and common rooms complete with televisions, sofas, table tennis tables, pool tables and more. Outdoor areas include AstroTurf basketball courts and hand ball grids.
Sustainable Focus
This building design phase had the future in mind. The twin structures employ a hybrid structural solution that combines steel as the primary framework with lightweight timber walls and timber cassette flooring to reduce the building’s embodied energy/carbon emissions. A thoughtfully designed rainwater harvesting system has been implemented to support the irrigation needs. This system minimises water wastage, ensuring responsible water usage within the building's premises. The building has also been future proofed for a solar system
Points of Interest
- Pastoral care, safety and student wellbeing are front and centre of the design.
- The names of the two houses are Aghalee and Donaghmore after the small Northern Ireland villages where Isabella and James Dilworth grew up.
- The building’s innovative and thoughtful design sets Dilworth up to provide an outstanding home-away-from-home for the Senior School’s youngest cohort, not just now, but well into the future.
