Transforming an iconic alpine destination in Queenstown
Rubix is leading the delivery of the highly complex Skyline Queenstown redevelopment for Skyline Enterprises, a multi‑stage programme transforming Bob’s Peak into a future‑focused alpine tourism destination. The redevelopment represents one of the largest private investments in New Zealand’s tourism sector and is scheduled for completion in early 2029. Construction works are being delivered in carefully sequenced and overlapping stages while Skyline remains fully operational for the public, requiring active management of safety, access and operational risk throughout the programme.
Scope and Project Leadership
The Skyline Queenstown redevelopment comprises a multi‑phase programme including a new 10‑seat gondola system, replacement top and bottom terminals, a multi‑storey car park, expanded hospitality and visitor facilities, and significant upgrades to infrastructure across the site.
Rubix was initially engaged to lead construction phase services and has maintained a central role as the programme has progressed. The team is providing Project Management, Contract Administration, Engineer’s Representative, and Design Management services, managing client decision‑making and risk, and supporting procurement, construction staging and coordination across multiple concurrent workstreams. Delivery is being undertaken by Naylor Love as head contractor, with Early Contractor Involvement shaping programme sequencing and parallel workstreams and buildability outcomes.
Delivery Approach
The redevelopment is being delivered through a staged and overlapping approach that allows key attractions, hospitality venues and transport infrastructure to remain operational while construction progresses. Works have been carefully planned and sequenced, with tightly managed and minimal shutdown periods used only where necessary to undertake critical transitions such as the gondola system changeover.
Rubix coordinates closely with Skyline Enterprises, Naylor Love and the consultant team to manage interfaces between completed and live stages, consulting on risk planning to support programme certainty and maintain clear communication across stakeholders as the project advances through successive phases.
Sustainability and Outcomes
The redevelopment delivers Skyline’s long‑term vision for a modern, efficient and resilient tourism destination. New facilities are being delivered with longevity, operational performance and visitor experience in mind, integrating upgraded transport systems, improved circulation and expanded hospitality spaces across the site.
Multiple stages have already been completed and opened to the public, including the new gondola system, terminals and supporting infrastructure. With further stages underway, the programme continues to progressively enhance Skyline Queenstown while maintaining safe, high‑quality visitor operations.
