Building Better Care for the future
Rubix was engaged by Boulcott Hospital in 2022 to manage the delivery of a significant hospital extension, representing Boulcott, Rangatira Investments and Vital Healthcare. The project scope includes the construction of two new operating theatres, an expanded Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and enhanced support service facilities, such as a new, modern kitchen. The development is aimed at increasing the hospitals surgical capacity, improving patient recovery spaces, and upgrading essential service infrastructure to meet growing healthcare demands.
Uninterrupted Healthcare
Rubix is delivering end-to-end construction project management services for this highly complex hospital expansion. A key requirement of the project has been maintaining full hospital operations throughout construction. This has been achieved through the implementation of a comprehensive and carefully coordinated staging plan. Rubix has taken a central role in facilitating clear and consistent communication between hospital services and construction teams. By actively managing interfaces and ensuring all stakeholders are aligned, Rubix has enabled uninterrupted healthcare delivery while allowing construction activities to proceed safely and efficiently.
From unknowns to solutions, delivering in a complex environment
One of the primary challenges faced during the Boulcott Hospital Project was ensuring that the hospital remained fully operational throughout the construction phase. This required meticulous planning, robust communication with the contractor, hospital staff and stakeholders, and strict adherence to health and safety protocols (including infection control measures) to minimise disruption to critical medical services. Coordinating construction activities around ongoing patient care, managing noise and dust control, and ensuring clear access routes for emergency services were all vital components in maintain the hospitals functionality while progressing with the build.
The Hospital has had 4 major renovations in its history, which meant the as-built information from early projects was sparce, and many unexpected things were found during the renovations. An agile and collaborative approach to the design was required.
