A major redevelopment project to give students and teachers the best facilities for the future.
A masterful master-plan
Rubix the project team through a master-planning process. Various iterations of masterplan were developed by RTA Studio in order to address the changing needs of the School and the Ministry. Extensive stakeholder liaison and management has been required throughout the project and excellent relationships have been maintained despite significant project challenges. The construction works are well underway and consist of six working stages which will be complete in 2021.
A complex staging process
Balmoral School is located on a challenging site with multiple entries, steep topography, poor ground conditions, asbestos materials, stormwater issues and a varied range of building stock. Furthermore, the scale of redevelopment works at the school means that a complex staging and implementation plan needs to be followed. The stakeholder liaison process that Rubix has led has been very comprehensive, and is based around regular meetings between the school, Rubix and the Ministry of Education which will be ongoing until project completion.
Points of interest
- The school is unique in the New Zealand setting as they have both a dedicated intermediate and primary school on the one site.
- The designers, RTA Studio, have prepared a design that establishes two strong but separate frontages for the Primary and Intermediate Schools.
- The design is mainly 2 storey to minimise footprint, maximise green space and allow for future growth. It also delivers an advanced Innovative Learning Environment (ILE) to reflect the school’s pedagogy.
