Enhancing surgical capacity within a live hospital environment
Rubix supported Anglesea Hospital and Evolution Healthcare in delivering the New Operating Theatre and CSSD Upgrade Project in Hamilton. Completed in February 2025, the project expands the hospital’s clinical capability through the integration of a new operating theatre, consult rooms, and upgraded support services within an existing facility.
Scope and Project Leadership
The project comprised the delivery of an additional operating theatre, associated consult spaces, and expanded clinical support functions. All works were undertaken within an operational and sterile hospital environment while maintaining continuity of service. Rubix provided end‑to‑end project management from inception to completion, coordinating the client, Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) partner, consultants, and hospital operational teams to achieve a feasible and efficient delivery pathway.
Challenges and Delivery Approach
The project required careful planning and execution to manage a complex live environment that included strict Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and Health and Safety requirements. Rubix worked with the ECI Contractor and operational staff to establish a multi‑stage construction plan that enabled safe concurrent operations. Working within existing structures required responses to passive fire non‑compliance and structural strengthening needs. The team mitigated these risks through early identification, rapid resolution, and timely client approvals to maintain progress. A complex consenting process was addressed early with Council, the Contractor, and the Lead Designer to minimise approval‑related delays.
Sustainability and Cultural Considerations
The project promoted efficient use of existing built assets by upgrading and integrating new clinical functions within the current hospital footprint, supporting long‑term operational performance.
The project was delivered on time and within budget, demonstrating Rubix’s capability in managing complex healthcare upgrades in operational environments.

- A structured, multi‑phase delivery plan enabled continuous hospital operations throughout construction.
- Early engagement with Council and project partners supported timely consenting and reduced programme risk.
- Robust project controls ensured effective coordination across multiple concurrent workstreams, maintaining safety, risk management, and delivery certainty.
