Reflecting on the Independent Schools NZ Conference: Planning ahead in challenging times

Last month, Matthew Willard of Aurecon and I had the privilege of speaking at the Independent Schools New Zealand annual conference, where approximately 200 education professionals gathered to discuss the future of education, including school property - and the affect property decisions can have on a student's education experience.

The power of preparation

Our core message was both simple and empowering: the more you plan and prepare, the stronger your foundation for success becomes. In school infrastructure projects, while some factors will always be beyond our control, thorough planning creates resilience and sets your project up for smooth execution.

We highlighted that schools with the ability to move projects forward are uniquely positioned right now to achieve exceptional outcomes with their projects, with the construction market slowly beginning to show signs of positive change.

Supporting independent schools through self-funded development

Independent schools operate differently from state schools, managing their own funding and infrastructure decisions without relying on Ministry of Education support. This independence allows for more flexible timing and decision-making when it comes to capital projects, but also requires careful financial planning and resource management.

Our role as industry professionals is to support independent schools through this period by providing clear guidance on planning and procurement processes and helping them maximise the value of every dollar they invest in their infrastructure from their own resources.

Government investment in state school infrastructure

While independent schools chart their own course, it's worth noting the significant developments in the wider education sector. Last week's announcement of $413 million in accelerated school infrastructure funding for state schools includes:

  • $58 million in new operating maintenance funding for state schools
  • $255 million for improvements to isolated, small and rural state schools
  • $100 million over five years for urgent infrastructure work in the state sector

This government investment represents a significant opportunity for state schools across New Zealand, with funding for essential works like painting, roof repairs, and cladding maintenance.

Looking forward

The education sector as a whole is navigating constant change. For independent schools, the current market conditions create a window of opportunity that forward-thinking school leaders should seriously consider as they plan their future infrastructure investments.

The conversation continues, and I'm already looking forward to next year's conference where we can share the outcomes of projects launched during this pivotal time for school infrastructure across both independent and state sectors in New Zealand.
