Back in 2020, Rubix was relatively new to the Wellington market and unknown within it. That has now changed, and we are delivering some of the region's most complex and high-profile projects. The Wellington office brings together experienced project managers with backgrounds spanning a broad range of sectors, from horizontal infrastructure to commercial and retail, alongside education, science laboratory, health and secure facilities. Across the team, we have extensive experience working in environments that demand careful coordination, strong programme management and a thorough understanding of how buildings need to work for the people who use them. Working in live, operational environments is something we do well. We understand the constraints, the risks, and the co-ordination required to keep construction progressing safely without disrupting the people and services the building continues to serve. We have worked in schools managing student transitions, secure facilities where access protocols shape every aspect of delivery, and hospitals where infection control and clinical proximity add further complexity. Clients can trust that the team understands what is at stake.

Some of our most rewarding Wellington projects have been in education. It is a sector that demands patience, collaboration, and a commitment to the end result, all of which are values that sit at the heart of how we work. Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Ara Whanui and Queen Margaret College are two projects that reflect this well.
Delivering weathertightness remediation and refurbishment across a live school environment is no small feat. On Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Ara Whanui, every stage was sequenced around the school calendar ensuring students experienced minimal disruption while construction moved forward without pause.
The key to making it work was collaborating with school leadership from the outset, bringing them into programme conversations early so decisions were made together and trust stayed intact throughout. The team also committed to continuous improvement, applying lessons from early buildings to those that followed, with delivery visibly strengthening from first stage to last. That kind of refinement only comes from a team invested in getting better as they go.
Our relationship with Queen Margaret College shows what long-term partnership looks like in practice. It began with an initial master planning project and a substantial library refurbishment, delivered to a high standard and building the trust that led to further work together. From there, we managed the conversion of a large, character-filled building into a boarding house for 18 students. Working to a fast-tracked programme, every opened wall carried the potential to reveal structural anomalies, asbestos or other unforeseen conditions requiring on-the-spot assessment. Maintaining momentum through those surprises, while holding a fixed end-of-year completion date, was the real achievement, made possible through close collaboration with a capable construction team and an engaged client.

Delivering at scale across the region
Beyond education, the Wellington team is delivering some of the most technically demanding projects in the region.
Our work on the Te Papa Biodiversity Research Centre is among the most significant and rewarding projects the team has undertaken. Engaged through a competitive tender, we have managed the project from concept phase and into construction. The facility is purpose-built for biodiversity research, with four-hour fire-rated concrete structures designed to house irreplaceable and internationally significant natural history collections. It also provides sophisticated laboratory environments to support the museum's ongoing research into its natural history wet collections. The building is targeting a five-star Green Star rating, reflecting Te Papa's commitment to environmental sustainability alongside scientific excellence.
Strong client engagement has defined this project from the outset, with dedicated representatives and direct input from the scientists and researchers who will use the building every day. Enabling works began in November 2024, with completion scheduled for 2028.

The PHF Science project at Kenepuru is a further example of the complex, technically demanding work our team is increasingly being trusted to lead. The new development spans 4,000 square metres of PC2 laboratory and supporting workspace, replacing existing campus buildings that have reached the end of their life. Rubix is providing project management and Engineer to the Contract services across the full project lifecycle.
A highlight of the project has been the meaningful engagement with local iwi Ngāti Toa Rangatira, whose input has shaped both the cultural significance of the site and the purpose of PHF Science, giving the building an identity and sense of place that extends well beyond its functional brief.
